A WOMAN has left people open-mouthed after she got her three-month-old baby’s ears pierced.
Katie Schadell, 31, explained that she got her ears pierced at just three-months-old, so wanted to do the same with her daughter.

As a result, the mother took her baby to Claire’s Accessories, where a male employee used a piercing gun to give the youngster’s ears some bling.
In a short clip shared on social media, we saw the very moment the baby’s ears were pierced.
After the earring was put into the child’s earlobe, the young girl instantly let out a cry, and was clearly in even more distress when the gun appeared to get stuck in her ear.
As her father held her still, the panic in his face was clear to see.
Katie was also worried when the gun got stuck, as she admitted: “Broke my whole heart. The guy got it stuck in her ear.”
She claimed that when the Claire’s employee got the piercing gun stuck in her daughters’ ear, she ‘definitely panicked for a second’.
She then added: “You can tell her daddy was on edge, we both were. But she looks so beautiful.”
But Katie explained that she is glad she got her daughters’ ears pierced, as she revealed that her baby ‘only cried for a second’ and was surrounded by her family so was ‘happy’ in seconds.
The mother explained that she decided to get her daughters’ ears pierced at a young age so that she doesn’t ‘pull at them’.
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @katiebartrum, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly gone viral and has since amassed 366,300 views.

But social media users were left totally divided by the video – whilst some claimed it was ‘sickening’ and ‘so cruel’ to get a babies’ ears pierced, others couldn’t see the issue.

Ear-piercing babies and toddlers

CAROL Cooper, Sun Doctor, reveals the medical implications of ear-piercing babies and toddlers:
- Ear-piercing in babies and toddlers is controversial. On the one hand, it could be seen as a form of child abuse. But it’s also widely done in many countries and cultures, and is a lot less of an assault than other procedures some girls have to endure.
- There are certainly medical hazards.
Infection is one, which is why many paediatricians recommend waiting until at least the first tetanus jab at two months of age. But there are also many other potential infections which routine vaccines don’t prevent. Getting ears pierced somewhere that just looks clean is no guarantee. - Tearing the earlobe is a risk if the earring gets caught on clothing or bedding, or the baby just pulls on it.
- The earrings can also fall out, and they’re small enough to be a choking hazard to a baby or young child.
Sometimes keloid scarring results, with an unsightly lumpy scar. - That’s why it’s better to wait till your child is old enough to want pierced ears, as well as to look after them herself.
Meanwhile, another TIkTok user penned: “The amount of judgement in the comments. Only thing I don’t like is that it was done with a gun but it’s her baby and her choice.”
Katie later clapped back to the haters and penned: “Lets stop mum shaming other mums on when they get their kids ears pierced.
“But thank you to those who were kind and educating about piercings and where to go.”
